5 easy, amazing day trips from Edinburgh

Edinburgh is one of the best cities in Europe for day trips. Within an hour or two, you can reach dramatic castles, coastal towns, famous sculptures and some of Scotland’s most important historic cities. If you’re staying longer than a couple of days, these trips are an easy way to turn an Edinburgh city break into a full Scotland experience without ever needing to move hotels.

If you’re based in the capital for a few days and want to explore beyond the Royal Mile, here are five of the best excursions from Edinburgh, all easy to do in a day.

1. The Kelpies & Falkirk

One of Scotland’s most striking modern landmarks, the Kelpies are 30-metre-high horse-head sculptures located in Helix Park near Falkirk. Designed by Andy Scott, they celebrate Scotland’s horse-powered heritage and look especially impressive at sunrise or sunset.

While you’re in the area, combine your visit with the nearby Falkirk Wheel, a rotating boat lift that connects two canals in a completely unique engineering feat.

Perfect for: photography, short walks, something unusual

2. Stirling

Often called the “Gateway to the Highlands”, Stirling is one of Scotland’s most historically significant cities. Perched atop a towering volcanic crag, Stirling Castle was the childhood home of Mary, Queen of Scots and its meticulously restored Royal Palace allows you to walk through rooms painted in the exact vibrant colours she would have seen.

Nearby, the towering National Wallace Monument offers panoramic views and tells the story of William Wallace and this is also the area where the famous Battle of Stirling Bridge took place.

Perfect for: castles, Scottish history, amazing views

Distance from Edinburgh: 1 hour - 1 hour 40 mins drive or 50 mins by train from Edinburgh Haymarket.

3. Dundee

Dundee is one of Scotland’s most underrated cities and has transformed into a modern cultural hub. The standout attraction is the striking V&A Dundee, a free design museum on the River Tay (some special exhibitions may charge entrance), and right next door, you can explore onboard the historic polar exploration ship RRS Discovery. Built right here in Dundee in 1901, the Royal Research Ship was custom-crafted to survive the world’s most punishing ice fields. It famously carried Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on their groundbreaking first expedition to the south polar regions, and the museum is outstanding.

Perfect for: museums, architecture, easy city exploring

4. St Andrews

Famous as the home of golf, St Andrews is a beautiful coastal town with a mix of history and scenery. You can explore the atmospheric ruins of St Andrews Cathedral and St Andrews Castle, walk along West Sands Beach or simply enjoy the cobbled streets and cafés.

Perfect for: coastal walks, history, golf fans

Distance from Edinburgh: 1 hr 20 mins drive, alternatively, take a train from Edinburgh Waverley to Leuchars Station, followed by a quick 10-minute bus or taxi ride into St Andrews.

5. North Berwick

North Berwick is one of the easiest and most rewarding coastal day trips from Edinburgh.

The highlight is the view across the sea to Bass Rock, home to one of the world’s largest gannet colonies. You can also explore the dramatic ruins of Tantallon Castle, perched right on the cliffs. The town itself is full of independent cafés and a relaxed seaside atmosphere.

Perfect for: coastal scenery, wildlife, relaxed day trip

Distance from Edinburgh: 50 mins drive or 35 mins train from Edinburgh Waverley.
